My Favorite Puzzle Games Of The Week

I was browsing through the website in search of games, when I decided it would be a good idea to check out the Puzzles section. Intrigued by the fact that I knew really few of the games featured there, I set out to find the ordering criterion. Top rated, alright. However, there was a specific ordering criterion that caught my eye – most played. Imagine my surprise when I found Transcripted (a personal favorite, already reviewed) in the last of the 7 sorted pages. It is a witty, well-designed, action-packed, extremely fun game; a gem, in all honesty. What other gems would be buried among the least played puzzle games?

My first pick was Blast Master. Strong name, right? Games are a matter of pride and prowess, I think. Whether mental or physical (through an avatar) skill, we are here to prove we are the best, the strongest, the meanest. What better way to do so than blasting things? True, graphics may look basic, but here are 30 different ways to prove you are the smartest person around while blowing up some steam — and all mines.

Secondly, I thought I’d give Grayscale a try, and I must say: there is a non-descript “Industrial Revolution” feel to it. This game turned out to be similar to Blast Master in that you need to figure out a strategy to carry out the goal of the level. In other words, another game simple-looking game that should not be discarded; it is really dynamic, it will make the wheels in your head turn, and of course: all that grey really does rest your eyes!

Trying to get back on track (that is to say, finding another game featuring lots of explosions), I went on to Maya’s Treasure. Truth be told, I expected to find a platform game or something of the sort. I found none. In fact, at first sight, all I found were really pretty graphics. Which is actually the point: this was developed as a hidden objects game, the one and true puzzle in this review. Of course there is a tutorial, but this is a short game and watching the walkthrough takes the fun out of it. However, those of you who are aching for a good puzzle, I challenge you: try and solve this one. It may prove to be the hardest you have come across.

However, the real surprise came last. Buried after all of these, I found Icescape 3, which is one of the most complete games I’ve seen. Graphics are great, sound effects are superb, but that is not all. This is an action game and a strategy game all rolled into one. It requires speed, instinct and brains. Lucky for us, there are plenty of hints throughout the game, besides the mandatory walkthrough, to help us stay alive… and boy do we need them!

Turns out my walk on the dark side of game popularity did end up in a pot of gold after all!
